Death and the hope of the resurrection

Death is one of the most painful realities of life. Sooner or later each of us loses someone we love. The Bible does not minimise this pain, but it offers a powerful hope: death does not have the last word for those who are in Christ.

Death as a sleep

When His friend Lazarus died, Jesus spoke about death in a surprising way: “Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.” (John 11:11). The Bible often describes death as a sleep, a state of rest from which God will awaken His people. Wise Solomon wrote: “For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing” (Ecclesiastes 9:5).

Based on Scripture, Adventists believe that those who have died are resting while they await the resurrection. This understanding brings peace: our loved ones are not suffering or watching us in sorrow, but sleeping peacefully until the morning of Christ’s return.

Resurrection morning

Christian hope is not a vague idea, but a concrete promise tied to the return of Jesus: “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16). Paul wrote these words to grieving believers, so that they would not sorrow like those who have no hope.

On that day, every separation will end. Families, friends and fellow believers will meet again, and the joy of that reunion will last forever.

A world without tears

The final chapters of the Bible describe the future God is preparing: “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” (Revelation 21:4). Today’s pain is real, but it is temporary.

This hope does not spare us tears, but it gives them meaning. We may weep, and Jesus Himself wept at Lazarus’ tomb, but we weep with our eyes fixed on the morning of the resurrection.

For reflection
