God’s peace in the middle of worry

Worry is part of life for many of us: money, health, children or the future. Jesus knew this struggle well and spoke openly about it, offering instead a gift the world cannot give: His peace.

A different peace

Jesus told His disciples: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27). The world’s peace depends on circumstances; Jesus’ peace comes from trusting that God is with us, even when circumstances do not change.

One day at a time

Jesus teaches us to live one day at a time: “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.” (Matthew 6:34). We do not ignore our responsibilities, but we refuse to carry tomorrow’s burdens today. We can entrust every worry to God in prayer.

For reflection

Write down the worries weighing on you right now. For each one, say a short prayer and hand it over to God. Notice how the state of your heart changes.
