It is easy to notice what we lack and harder to see what we have already received. The Bible invites us to an attitude of gratitude that changes the way we see life, people and God.
Forget not all His benefits
The psalmist spoke to his own soul: “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits” (Psalm 103:2). Gratitude begins with remembering: answered prayers, good people God has placed in our path, health, our daily bread.
A simple habit, such as writing down three things we are thankful for each evening, can help us see God’s hand in the small things.
Thankful in everything
Paul goes even further: “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). We are not called to give thanks for evil, but to give thanks in every situation, knowing that God remains good and present.
Gratitude does not deny pain, but it protects us from bitterness. A thankful heart becomes a calmer and more generous heart.
For reflection
What three things can you thank God for today? Who could you thank this week for the good they have done for you?
