Health – a gift from God

Adventists are known around the world for their interest in a healthy lifestyle. This concern does not come from fashion or from a wish to follow rules, but from the conviction that our body is a gift from God that we are called to care for.

The body, a temple of the Holy Spirit

Paul reminded the first Christians of a profound reality: “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God” (1 Corinthians 6:19). If God chooses to live in us, the way we treat our body becomes a form of respect for Him.

This means a balanced diet, enough rest, exercise, fresh air, water and avoiding substances that harm us, such as tobacco and alcohol. These are simple choices, but they can add good years to our lives.

Everything for the glory of God

Faith is not confined to church; it touches every part of life, even our daily meals: “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31). Caring for our health is not an end in itself, but a way to have energy and clarity to serve God and others.

At the same time, health is not a reason for pride or for judging others. Everyone has their own journey and their own struggles, and God calls us to encourage one another with gentleness.

Health for the whole person

The Bible sees a person as a whole: body, mind and spirit. The apostle John wrote to a friend: “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health” (3 John 2). And Proverbs reminds us that “a merry heart doeth good like a medicine” (Proverbs 17:22).

Good relationships, gratitude, forgiveness and peace with God have a real impact on our health. The Sabbath, with its rest and quiet, is also a gift for body and soul.

For reflection

What small habit could you change this week to take better care of your health? Perhaps a daily walk, more water or better sleep. Ask God for strength to take that step.
