Parents and children – faith at home

Parents have a huge influence on their children’s faith. Not through long sermons, but through everyday example, prayers said together and the way they behave at home.

The way they should go

Proverbs gives parents an encouragement: “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6). The values we plant early stay deep in a child’s heart, even if their fruit appears only later.

With gentleness and patience

The Bible also asks parents for balance: “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” (Ephesians 6:4). Discipline needs love, listening and time together. Children who feel loved and heard are more open to knowing God.

For reflection

What family tradition, such as a prayer at the table or a Bible story at bedtime, could you start this week? What will your children remember about faith in your home?

Bible verses are quoted from the King James Version.
