The name “Adventist” comes from the word “advent”, which means “coming”. Seventh-day Adventists live with the hope that Jesus Christ will soon return to earth, personally and visibly, to take home those who love Him.
A sure promise
When Jesus ascended to heaven, the disciples stood looking up. Two angels told them: “This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:11). His return will not be a hidden or symbolic event, but one the whole world will see: “Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him” (Revelation 1:7).
This promise has encouraged Christians in every age. It reminds us that history is not heading towards chaos, but towards a meeting with our Saviour.
Living ready
Jesus did not give us a date, but an encouragement: “Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.” (Matthew 24:44). Being ready does not mean living in fear, but living each day in friendship with Jesus, loving the people around us and doing good.
The hope of His return also gives us a new perspective on today’s problems. Pain, injustice and death will not last forever. God will make all things new.
For reflection
What would your life look like if you lived each day with the hope of Jesus’ return? What would you like to say to Him when you see Him face to face?
