Words that build up

Words have great power. They can encourage or hurt, calm a conflict or inflame it. The Bible teaches us to be careful about what we say and how we say it.

A soft answer

Proverbs gives us a simple principle for relationships: “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.” (Proverbs 15:1). In the family, at work or in church, our tone of voice and choice of words can completely change a conversation.

Words like honey

Kind words are a real gift: “Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.” (Proverbs 16:24). Sincere appreciation, encouragement or a “thank you” can lift someone on a hard day. We can consciously choose to speak words that build up.

For reflection

Who could you speak a word of encouragement to this week? Is there a conversation where you need a soft answer instead of a harsh one?

Bible verses are quoted from the King James Version.
