Many people see laws as limits that restrict their freedom. The Bible, however, presents the Ten Commandments as a gift from a God who loves us and knows what is good for us. They describe what love for God and for people looks like.
A law that refreshes
The psalmist did not see the law as a burden, but as a source of life: “The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul” (Psalm 19:7). The first four commandments show us how to love God, and the last six how to love our neighbour. Together they protect our relationships, families, lives and the trust between people.
Adventists believe these commandments, including the Sabbath commandment, are still valid today, not as a way of earning salvation, but as a guide for the life of those who have been saved.
Obedience out of love
Jesus linked obedience to love: “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15). We do not obey in order to be loved; we obey because we are loved. Just as a child who feels safe trusts and listens to their parents, the believer follows God with joy.
For reflection
Read Exodus 20:1-17. Which commandment feels most relevant to your life today? What would your obedience look like if it came from gratitude rather than obligation?
