Deep down, many people believe they have to be “good enough” for God to accept them. The Bible brings much better news: salvation is not a reward we earn, but a gift we receive. This truth stands at the centre of Adventist faith and changes the way we relate to God.
We all need grace
Scripture is honest about our condition: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 3:23-24). No one is too good to need grace, and no one is too far away to receive it.
Sin is not just a list of mistakes, but a separation from God, the source of life. Its consequence is serious, but God’s answer is greater still: “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23).
Saved through faith
Paul sums up the gospel in a few words: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9). Faith is not a merit; it is the open hand that receives the gift God offers.
Good works do not earn salvation, but they follow naturally. Whoever has been forgiven much learns to love much. Obedience becomes a response of gratitude, not an attempt to impress God.
A new beginning, every day
God’s grace does not stop on the day we first believed. It goes with us day by day, even when we fall again. John encourages us: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9).
This assurance does not make us careless; it gives us peace. We no longer live in fear of rejection, but in the joy of being God’s beloved children, growing step by step into the likeness of Jesus.
For reflection
Is there something in your life you think God cannot forgive? Read 1 John 1:9 again and bring it to Him in prayer. What would change if you lived each day with the certainty that you are loved and accepted?
